12 Logos which inspire me : Philip Clarke (Pic)

Both these designs work well, the gradients may not translate well into B&W, but they are both striking and distinctive. The top logo I think has a classical or corporate look, however the blue symbol within the design almost resembles a musical note on a score sheet. The bottom logo reminds me of the Celtic swirl or curl which is almost always used within Celtic knot work. It also resembles a "C" or "O", Ceol Oirghialla.

I think the top logo is very effective. It resembles a stage or theatre front, a perfect visual identity and representation for this organisation, "Arts & Culture". This is a perfect example of the type of visual, message we must attempt to design, one which captures all of our clients essence and identity.
In the logo below again we see the Celtic swirl, which here also has an organic look, plant buds included. This type of design can be decorative and elegant, however here it has been successfully used and visually contrasted alongside a pale modern sans-serif typeface, and anchored by the striking red "X".

The Design above creates an established feeling with the viewer. The vertical shapes, as well as representing and resembling piano keys, also resemble columns or pillars all holding up a modern roof or stroke across the top. I think this logo is very successful, symbolising who the organization are and what also what they do.
The logo below is simple and effective, the decoration around the "T" looks similar to the symmetrical patterns seen within Celtic knot work, both sides exactly the same. This single letter logo would also work very well on its own.

Both these designs clearly have a more modern visual effect, however they are effective and look extremely well. Wave Alchemy has a logo which resembles a sound wave or audio samples visual on a digital meter or equalizer. Below "M" is made up of strings, the letter representing the word music and the strings an instrument. However both these representations may not be as effective without their typeface to accompany them.

I really like both these designs; they are both sharp and modern. They are made up of simple geometric shapes, arranged in a distinctive and interesting way. I think that both designs work extremely well on their own and they both also resemble electronic components or elements. This could be the modern twist needed alongside some Celtic knot work to create a unique logo for our client.

Although these are both very modern designs, I think they look extremely well. If the "O" and "C" above were swapped around, "Ceol Oirghialla". Simply just two circles with lines between, maybe this layout could be developed further.
Below the message is obvious and the text and design function as one. Again very simple yet very effective.

12 Logos to make me a better designer!!

I know this particular logo doesn't have a link to music, but I love its design. The crafty use of negative space in the 'G' really grabs my attention and adds value to the logo.

I love the ornate graphic at the top of this logo, but in my opinion the text is too industrial and blocky.
I believe a calligraphy type would of suited better.

I Love this logo! Great use of the treble clef and the colours really compliment each other. Its simple minimalistic and eye catching.

One of the most iconic music symbols to date. The MTV logo has truly stood the test of time, its simple design has been around since 1981. Although it has been every colour under the sun, it has never changed its form.

I came across this logo by pure and utter fluke, but I'm really glad I did. I love the quirkiness and simple genius of the designer. I love how it subtly adds to the musical note without taking away the overall look.

I wanted to find a logo that everyone recognised and associated with music, without the tell tale signs. the EMI logo is a great example. I love how bold and in your face the font is, surrounded by a 'Loud' shade of red but just as eye catching if in black and white.

The ministry of sound logo is beautiful, its shape and form remind me of a family crest or shield. I love how neat and tidy it is, sticking to the rule of thirds. You also get a three dimensional feel from the gate in the middle. Cracking!
The 'Fender' logo is less about graphics or colour, just a simple font based design, thus one of the many reasons why I like it so much. In my opinion a font based logo can be just as striking as a graphic based one.

In my list I wanted to include some existing Music College logos. This particular one is for the 'Goshen College Music Center'. What attracted me to this logo is the abstract graphic that hangs above the text. In my opinion it represents sheet music, but to others it could be something completely different, and that's the beauty.

From the brief I got a sense that the music department would like something traditional with an Irish feel. The logo above features the ancient celtic spirals that decorate the newgrange entrance stone. I think we could use something similar to this in our own design.

The Sennheiser logo is simple with an abstract eye catching graphic. The company use both the graphic and text separately as logos, this is something we should consider when drafting our own logo designs.

The final design I have picked is the 'Converse' logo. Again it is a simple idea, yet the 'Star' symbol is one of the most widely known logos today. This goes to show that our own designs don't have to be complex and filled with colour to create something iconic.

Well there you go, a quick look at the logos I hope to gain some inspiration from. hopefully I can take all this jibber jabber and put it into practice as I start to work on the first twenty drafts!! With a bit of luck, somebody out there (other than me) can gain something from this post and put it to good use.

p.s. If you make any money I CALL HALF!

Research : Philip Clarke (Pic)

First we decided to look at the stories mentioned within our meeting with the client. Our client mentioned that the name of the school is Ceol Oirghialla meaning Oriel Music. The name comes form traditional Irish stories and mythology from the locality of Louth, Meath and Armagh, which were once one kingdom Oirghialla.
Two of the stories mentioned were The Brown Bull of Cooley and The Harp of Dagda.

For me this suggests a traditional design, elegant and decorative possibly including celtic knotwork and denoting Irish Heritage or an established classical look. However it was also mention that although the trebble cleff symbol may be elegant and decorative, that the client would like somthing new.

There were also a number of other elements and considerations which were mentioned by the client including that the schools courses include classical, musical, performance and recording within all courses and also that the school periodically performs shows and productions locally, and this may be somthing which should be taken into account within the design process.

This logo will be displayed on a variety of mediums and must translate well to both black and white and color printed, promotional and administrative material. It must be visually effective and representational of the department and school, but it must also compliment the existing DKIT logo and graphical visual idenity of the institute.

Brief: Ceol Oirghialla : Philip Clarke (Pic)

Creative Multimedia

Multimedia Tools and Techniques
Logo Project

Aim

The aim of the project is to create an original visual identity for the Music section within the Department of Music and Creative Media.  The Music section is called Ceol Orighialla.

Brief

Your group is to research, develop and create three unique final designs, which communicate the ethos of Ceol Orighialla.  The logo should convey the traditional and modern aspects of Ceol Orighialla.  You will design a selection of printed material and example online solutions.  Your final solutions will need to work at a variety of sizes and be able to be photocopied.  Additional areas for consideration would be the heritage and mythology of the area. Your group will present three finished concepts to the clients during a 15 minute presentation. You will work up your final ideas in Illustrator making sure the file is saved in the ai. file format.
